Joseph Mallord William Turner

In 2004 a collector bought a seascape painting at a small UK auction in Kent for less than $4,000. The collector had reason to believe that the 13 x 10 inch painting was actually an original work by JMW Turner. Historians and scientists later performed pigment testing on the oil on panel, realizing that the work did date back to 1805. The painting titled “Fishing Boats in a Stiff Breeze” was later presented to scholars in South London. By 2012 the painting was valued at over 20 million dollars.
