Scientific Test: X-ray Diffraction

Edvard Munch

In 2016, X-ray diffraction was used to solve a mystery of white spots on a version of “The Scream” by Munch. The painting, which hangs at the Norwegian National Museum, contains a number of white stains on the lower-right corner. The markings were originally believed to be bird excrement. New testing has revealed that the markings are actually candle wax. An analysis team from Antwerp reviewed to tests to find that the sample definitely matched wax and not another substance.
