Jean-Francois Millet

In the 1980s a missing painting by Jean-Francois Millet was discovered at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The painting “The Captivity of the Jews in Babylon” dating back to 1848, was found under a known painting “The Young Sheperdess” painted in 1870. An X-ray revealed the strong under-painting was in fact another work of art completely. Historians then worked to reveal that it was not an under painting but a previously known work. These types of discoveries are essential to scholars and collectors, searching for lost works.
