Artist: Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres

Artist: Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres

A lost painting by Ingres was recently discovered in a former French hospital, Hôtel-Dieu in the town of Lons-le-Saunier. The painting was rolled up in the attic of the hospital’s chapel and seemingly forgotten. The curator, Emmanuel Buselin was conducting an inventory of historical monuments in the region when he came across the painting, which was covered in dust. After the painting was cleaned and unrolled, scholars realized that the painting was second version of Ingres’s “Le Voeu de Louis XIII” created in 1824. It is believed that the painting hung in the church of Saint-Désiré until it was removed in 1936 so the church could be restored. The lost Ingres painting could be attributed and authenticated through extensive provenance research and conservation efforts.
